West Africa Regional: Promoting Worker Rights, Gender Equality, and a Regional Voice for Working People

duration: 1 year (From 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021)
budget: not communicated

Project description
To build the capacity of West African unions, the Center will integrate informal sector unions into Labor’s campaign for social protection in ECOWAS countries. The Center will develop the skills of a new generation of Nigerian activists to build more inclusive unions with women, youth, and workers in non-traditional employment and combat gender-based violence at work. Finally, to ensure that Nigerian unions fulfill their democratic role, the Center will support joint planning and action between unions, journalists and students through the Nigerian Labor and Civil Society Coalition.

Objective 1: To expand the inclusion of informal sector workers as key constituents in the West African Union (OTUWA) campaign for social protections

Objective 2: To enhance the core skills of new leaders in strategic NLC affiliates to contribute to a stronger and more representative labor movement

Objective 3: To promote gender equality and sustain trade union action against gender-based violence in workplaces across Nigeria

Objective 4: To strengthen labor’s relationship with key civil society allies and promote joint action in defense of fundamental human rights in Nigeria
