Promoting Workers Rights in Ethiopia’s Textile and Garment Sector
● Objective 1 : To increase textile and apparel sector workers’ participation in exercising and defending their labor rights and building independent and democratic worker organizations to collectively represent them.
● Objective 2 : To assist the strengthening of tripartite labor relations forums between labor, textile and garment employers and regional government, in the industrial parks and zones toward improving the regulatory framework for and compliance with worker rights standards.
● Objective 3 : To build the capacity of women workers to participate in their union and advocate for themselves through training, education and leadership development
The SC will collaborate with Ethiopian trade unions and a respected women’s legal rights NGO to strengthen the capacity of workers in the country’s textile and garment sector to defend and assert their rights. The program will support union organizing and bargaining efforts, build structures of labor rights dialogue, and empower women workers to take on a more active role in union leadership and workplace monitoring. The program builds upon existing legal and organizational structures to help Ethiopian workers make worker rights a reality in an industrial sector under harsh criticism for workplace abuse and rights violations.
