Brazil: Rights Based Approaches to Promote Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining in Brazil and Latin America

duration: 1 year 3 months 1 day (From 1 May 2020 to 31 July 2021)
budget: not communicated

Description of the project
To help protect the human and labor rights of vulnerable workers in Brazil and Paraguay, the Center will develop the capacity of its partners to better represent and advocate for historically-marginalized groups such as women, Afro-Brazilians, and LGBTQ workers, to construct and implement human rights and security plans, and to build partnerships to assist Venezuelan migrant workers in constructing sustainable livelihoods.. In addition, the Center will support efforts to increase the membership bases of Brazilian unions, thus enhancing their advocacy capacity, and financial and institutional sustainability.

Objective 1) To strengthen the physical, administrative and digital security of members and leaders of Brazilian unions, especially for organizations in the Amazon region where conflicts over natural resources have led to increased violence against civil society representatives

Objective 2) To qualitatively and quantitatively improve the union representation of historically-discriminated groups of workers, including Afro-Brazilians, LGBTQ, and women

Objective 3) To promote the labor and human rights of Venezuelan migrants in Brazil.

Objective 4) To enhance the political and financial sustainability of Brazilian unions through the development and implementation of new strategies that will aid them in expanding their membership bases among both formal and informal-sector workers
