HIV/AIDS prevention and migration in the construction industry

duration: 4 years 5 months (From 1 August 2007 to 31 December 2011)
budget: 654,863 EUR

Immediate objective:
The construction unions are capable of conducting advocacy on the prevention of HIV/AIDS and have strengthened their organizational capacity to support the construction workers at the local construction sites and their surroundings with a high risk of HIV/AIDS infection.

Development objective:
Trade unions have contributed to the reduction of HIV/AIDS discrimination and stigmatisation o HIV-positive construction workers in Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Working methods:
1. Consolidating the internal organisational set-up of HIV/AIDS and OSH in the unions, development of strategic planning and HIV/AIDS policy positions for advocacy and exchange of experiences with other unions from the region.
2. Consolidation of core trainers to train branch leaders, shop stewards and rank and file members. This will include capacity building of national, regional and branch leaders and workers representatives to be able to strengthen membership services with HIV/AIDS support, care and counselling.
3. Strengthening the lobbying and advocacy capacity of national leaders a.o. to gain influence amongst employers and within decision-making bodies such as sector - and national tripartite institutions. Regional workshops will facilitate quality-input and exposure to international best practices of other African union partners and the global union BWI.
4. Local and national campaigns and awareness raising workshops at the workplaces.
